Case No. 90CR27109, Re: Murder of Tommy Lynn

“On the early morning of May 11, 1990, the deceased and the perpetrator got into a scuffle that turned deadly. After a struggle, the assailant pulled out a gun and shot Tommy Lynn dead. It is reported the two men were fighting over a drug deal from the day before. I was pointed out by a gang member, and he was also a known drug user as well. When I was arrested, I repeatedly told the officers I did not do this crime, but they beat me until I signed a false confession. I did not kill Tommy Lynn. A rival gang member and known drug user lied to the police about me, which gave the police tunnel vision, or they wanted to solve the case by any means necessary and I wasn’t anyone of significance the public would miss nor would they believe I was beaten into a false confession. I am incarcerated because someone lied, and I was not mentally strong enough at just 18 years old to endure torture, manipulation, and isolation for a long period of time. I do not want to sound like a victim when there are men dead, but both families were wronged. Someone tore Tommy Lynn from his family, and I was taken from my family as well. The deceased’s family is being lied to about who committed this crime. I pray for their peace and understanding. 

I am not the person that did this, nor the person the police painted me out to be. I was handcuffed to a ring on the wall, wrist to ankle balancing on one leg, beaten and punched while being asked questions. The police were trying to feed me information about the crime as they switched positions and had me handcuffed behind my back through the ring on the wall so they could slap and punch me unimpeded. For hours that seemed like days, it went on. I could not see outside, and there was no clock, so it felt like forever. I had never been treated like this in my life. I was later questioned by another Detective, Det. Graffeo, and A.S.A. Nancy Black and told them I didn’t know anything about any homicides; they wrote this down and left the  precinct and the questioning started back up - this time more intense and violent until I broke and did what they wanted and signed the papers.”

Case No. 90CR27110, Re: Murder of Belmont Brooks

This case was alleged to have been about gang rivalry. The assailant reportedly walked up to Belmont Brooks and two friends, Clarence Woodhouse and Lindsey Anderson, and started shooting at them, striking and killing Brooks. The three men were reportedly in the Vice-Lords gang and I was in the Gangster Disciples gang. Devon Showers asserts that he did not shoot Belmont Brooks. He says he was admittedly a delinquent teen, and it made him vulnerable to be picked up, and the detectives picked me out and focused on making him the culprit.

“I was put in a small room with no windows or clock and the lights were kept off when Det. Abreu and Det. O’Connor were not in the room. When the officers were in the room, they were beating me, telling me to stop lying that I didn’t do it. This went on and on until I broke and signed what they wanted me to sign, a false confession.”

Case No. 90CR2711 1, Re: Murder of Shaundell Hubbard

“This was another case of gang rivalry. The assailant was said to have driven down Hazel Street to Windsor, screamed out G.D. (short for Gangster Disciple) and started shooting at Vice-Lords, striking Shaundell Hubbard. Someone was pointed out as the culprit as a known Gangster Disciple. The Gangster Disciples and the Vice Lords were known rivals.

I was questioned by the same detectives, Det. Abreu and Det. O’Connor, for hours and

told them I didn’t do it. The detectives started beating me and handcuffed me in uncomfortable

positions until I broke down and couldn’t take it anymore and signed the prepared statements

– false confessions. I did not kill Shaundell Hubbard. I have never killed anyone nor did I drive by shooting. Shaundell was reportedly holding a baby when he was murdered, luckily the baby was safe. I would never do such a thing.”
