Victory! Ccpsa resolves to hold quarterly hearings on cpd-ice collaboration
The Immigrant’s Rights Working Committee of CAARPR applauds the CCPSA’s vote today, September 24, 2026, to establish quarterly hearings with CPD regarding their implementation and enforcement of the Welcoming City Ordinance.
After mobilizing to these meetings for almost a year, we are proud to see the Commission finally address the community’s concerns around CPD’s collaboration with ICE. Almost exactly a year ago, Operation Midway Blitz began in and around Chicago. Our communities lost hundreds of loved ones and continue to see neighbors abducted almost daily.
This victory comes after monthly public comment, direct action, and agitation at and around CCPSA meetings.
We overcame stalling, obstruction, and flat-out denial perpetrated by former CPD superintendent Snelling, CCPSA president Remel Terry, and commissioner Sandra Wortham.
Prior to the vote, Commissioners Terry and Wortham were directly antagonistic to Commissioner Guzman and her proposal, voting nay and insisting that the effort was duplicative of current commission work despite being repeatedly told the opposite by the community. In fact, Vice President Angel Rubi Navarijo spoke to this during the debate, describing various roadblocks he experienced while attempting to bring CPD-ICE collaboration to the agenda over the course of the last several months.
The IRWC specifically thanks Commissioner Angelique Guzman, who wrote and introduced this proposal, and the other four commissioners for voting in favor.
Our work is not done! We will continue to mobilize to CCPSA meetings and calling for police accountability. Increasing transparency is only the first step to accountability, and creating these avenues for community involvement in policing gets us closer to community control.
